Most desktop PC's will accomodate new hardware but there are some considerations that should be addressed before you purchase. The first consideration is the availability of ports in your computer to receive the new hardware. Then you need to know what types of ports are available. Finally you'll need to shop around and find hardware compatible with your available ports.

Laptops on the other hand are not so accomodating as to have internal ports available. Unlike desktops there are no PCI ports of any type available. New USB bases hardware can be added with one consideration, USB 1.0 or USB 2.0. Most "newer" laptops have USB 2.0 ports whereas an "older" laptop may only have USB 1.0 ports. You will need to choose new USB based hardware with this in mind. Also, laptops generally have at least 1 Type I or Type II PCMCIA slot. Though a little more costly in some cases it is possible to find hardware of all kinds that accomodate these ports.

Whether it be a laptop or a desktop, existing hardware can fail. It can fail because of an incompatible hardware driver update or simply fail because of age. The most common hardware in your system (ethernet, audio and video) is probably integrated into your motherboard. When these items fail they can be replaced as long as there are available USB or PCI ports available.
